      The Breed:

The British cat is one of the oldest breed in Europe. His ancestors came to Europe with the Romans probably as early as the IInd century A.C. Of course, to become breed we know today, it took many centuries. The British breed was recognized in the twentieth of the XX century. First British Shorthair Cats were imported to Poland in 1992.

British Longhair (Highlanders) are born sometimes when both shorthair parents have a longhair gene. Where does it come from? After the IInd World War all the breeds were destroyed. To rebuild the cats population breeders crossed with other breeds, for example with Persian cats. And it is the Persian's who are ‘responsible’ for this longhair gene. Many feline associations still does not recognize this breed, but since it became more and more popular, some recently have.

 Appearance:

British Shorthair Cat is a medium to large sized cat, muscular and compact. Highlanders look even bigger because of their excellent fur. His chest and shoulders are broad and massive, neck – short and strong. Legs are short and muscular; paws thick and round. Their tail is medium in length, thick with rounded tip. Its head is round, massive with a broad skull and a firm chin. The nose short, broad and straight; a curved profile without any stop. Cheeks are full and chubby. The big round whisker pads give the short muzzle a definite outline. Ears are medium in size, broad at the base, slightly rounded at the tips and set wide apart. Eyes are large and round, set wide apart. Colour conforming to coat colour, usually orange, sometimes blue or green. Coat is actually semi-long and very dense, with sufficient undercoat, crisp and not flat-lying. Standing away from the body by means of sufficient undercoat, creating the appearance of plush pile; texture crisp and not woolly. This is fur what makes a British cat so exceptional. Any colour and point colour without white is accepted. Besides, the longest hair is on a tail which makes it a gorgeous plume.

Character:
Although the kittens are as playful as other cats, when they grow up they become well tempered. Cats of this breed are known well for their even and pleasant temper. They are tolerant, friendly and can adapt very easily. They are also very intelligent and appreciate contact with housemates. Despite their soft character the don’t agree with everything; they keep their own opinion and are courious and brave.

Grooming:
British Longhair’s fur is not very complicated in grooming but you should comb regularly it at least three times a week. Fortunately it does not tangle but you should take care of armpits. There is no need to bath very often – only before show.
